An Economic Analysis of Terrorism: A Book Proposal
I'm excited about this project and have begun to write draft chapters of an upper-undergraduate book on terrorism, based on my classes taught on the same topic at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign over three years.
Seldom are days when we do not read, hear or see clips on terror events occurring around the world. Dealing with terrorism is a global challenge. The aim of this book is to present facts, trends and empirical results, dispel myths and theoretically "analyze" the behavior of terrorists, terror organizations and target countries so as to gain an understanding of their decision making and how different counter-terror measures work or may not work.
The book begins with a discussion of what is meant by an economic analysis of terrorism and how economic principles can be applied to understand the terrorism problem.
Here are rough and incomplete drafts of the preface and some chapters --- which can be downloaded. This will change over time as chapters will become more complete and new chapters are added.
Chapter 1: Introduction
Chapter 4: Some Basics of Game Theory
Chapter 12: Preemptive and Preventive Measures: "DP" Approach to Terrorism
